Documents Required for ITR Filing: Complete Checklist

Every return starts with the same question: what do I need to gather? This checklist lists the documents that most individuals and small business owners use, grouped by income type. Work through the sections that apply to you, and skip the rest. Salaried employees can use the shorter list for salaried taxpayers.
A note on timing. The Income-tax Act, 2025 took effect on 1 April 2026, and it uses different terms, such as tax year instead of assessment year. Forms, due dates and some document requirements can change with each filing season. Check the income tax e-filing portal for the current forms before you send this list.
Which documents are required for ITR filing?

It depends on your income sources. Most people need their PAN, their Aadhaar, Form 16 or salary records, bank interest certificates, the Annual Information Statement and investment proofs if they claim deductions. Add capital gains statements, rent receipts or business books if they apply. The sections below list each document by income type.
Identity and bank details
Your PAN card. Your Aadhaar, with the mobile number linked to it. Bank account details for refunds, such as a cancelled cheque or a bank statement that shows the account number and IFSC.
Income statements
Form 16 from each employer you worked for during the year. If you changed jobs, you may have one from each employer.
Salary slips, if your employer has not issued Form 16 yet or if you are checking figures.
TDS certificates for income from other sources, such as Form 16A.
Interest certificates from banks, post offices and any other lenders.
The Annual Information Statement and the tax credit statement, which show the income and tax deducted that the department has on record. Compare them with your own figures before you file.
Capital gains
Contract notes or capital gains statements for shares and mutual funds, showing purchase and sale dates and amounts.
Sale deeds and payment proof for any property you sold, along with the purchase deed.
Deductions and investment proofs
Premium receipts for life insurance and health insurance.
Receipts for investments such as provident funds, public savings schemes and tax-saving instruments.
Home loan interest and principal certificates from your lender.
Rent receipts and your landlord's PAN, if you claim house rent allowance and the rent is above the threshold.
Donation receipts, where you are claiming them.
Only collect proofs for the deductions you will claim. The regime you choose decides which deductions are available, so confirm that before you request anything.
Business or professional income
Books of account or a profit and loss statement for the year.
Sales and purchase invoices, bank statements for the business account, and GST returns if you are registered.
Other documents
Last year's return, for reference.
Details of any assets or bank accounts held outside India, if you have them.
Any notice you received from the income tax department.
Keeping the list current
The list changes with the forms, the tax year and the way the department shares data. Review it before each filing season. Compare it with the forms on the portal, and remove anything that no longer applies. Add anything clients have repeatedly asked about, so the next request is complete.
Naming files for the year

Use the document name, the tax year and the client's name, separated by hyphens. Keep the names identical across the year, so a search for one document returns one file.
Questions people ask
Do I need Form 16 if I have no salary?
No. Form 16 is issued by an employer for salary paid. If you have no salary, you will not have one.
Is the Annual Information Statement necessary?
It is not a document you send with the return, but it is the best check against the income the department already has on record. Download it and compare it with your own records.
What if I do not have a document on the list?
Tell your CA or adviser. Many documents can be replaced by a bank statement or a summary from the institution. Do not guess at figures.
