ITR-7 for Trusts and NGOs: Documents to Request Months in Advance

A trust's return looks simple until the trustees change. The deed on file is years old. The donation register stopped in March. Then the auditor asks for bank statements, and one account turns out to be in a former trustee's name.
What documents does an ITR-7 need?
ITR-7 is the return for trusts, political parties and institutions that file under sections 139(4A) to 139(4D) of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The core trust pack is the trust deed with every amendment, the trust's PAN, the trustees' KYC, bank statements for every account, the donation register with receipts, and the audited accounts. The complete ITR document checklist covers the common papers. The list below adds what is specific to trusts.
When is the ITR-7 due?
A trust whose accounts must be audited usually files by 31 October. A trust with no audit works to a different date, set by Explanation 2 to section 139(1), so confirm it on the portal. Dates can be extended, so check the latest notifications or the portal. Find out early whether the accounts are audited, because that decides which date the trust works to.
Five gaps that delay a trust return
1. The original deed only. A trust deed changes through amendments and trustee changes. Ask for the deed with every amendment, and for the document that names the current trustees.
2. Trustees who joined or left. Each current trustee needs a PAN and KYC on file. Ask for a trustees' resolution that records the current trustees and the person who signs the return.
3. Only the main bank account. Trusts often hold more than one account, including fixed deposits and accounts used for donations. Ask for the statement and interest certificate for every account, covering the full year.
4. A donation register with gaps. Each donation needs a line and a receipt. Where a receipt is missing, ask the trust to record what exists and how the gift came in, rather than leaving the line blank.
5. An audit that starts in October. The auditor needs the ledger before the report can be signed. Ask for the ledger early. For most registered trusts the audit report is filed in Form 10B, so ask who will sign it and by when.

Which Act applies to a trust's return?
Returns for FY 2025-26 are filed under the Income-tax Act, 1961. From tax year 2026-27, the return sits under the Income-tax Act, 2025, which renumbers the sections. Do not carry the 139(4A) to 139(4D) references into a new year's file. Check the 2025 Act provision and the form notified for that year first. If the trust also holds a GST registration, its papers are covered in GST registration for trusts and societies.
