ITR Documents for Freelancers and Consultants: The Hardest Ones to Chase

ITR documents for freelancers arrive in every shape except the one you need. Invoices sit in a mailbox, TDS certificates come one client at a time, and a second bank account turns up that nobody mentioned. Most of the chase happens before anyone has picked the form.
For a freelancer, ITR documents usually mean fee invoices, Form 16A and TDS certificates, bank statements for every account, and Form 26AS and AIS to match the TDS. The form decides the rest. A freelancer who uses section 44ADA files ITR-4, and one who does not files ITR-3. The complete ITR filing checklist is the master list for everything else.
Which ITR form does a freelancer file?
ITR-4 if the freelancer uses presumptive taxation under section 44ADA. ITR-3 otherwise. Confirm the form before collecting anything, because the list follows the form. The ITR-4 presumptive taxation checklist covers that route in detail.
For FY 2025-26, the 1961 Act applies. From tax year 2026-27, the 2025 Act places presumptive taxation under section 58, which replaces sections 44AD, 44ADA and 44AE. Check the form notified for that year.
Does 44ADA cover every freelancer?
No. Section 44ADA covers specified professions under section 44AA(1). Those include legal, medical, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration and film artists. A freelancer outside that list files ITR-3. Under the scheme, deemed profit is 50% of gross receipts, and the scheme has a receipts limit to check for the year.
The 44ADA checklist for doctors and professionals lists the papers for that route.
What documents prove a freelancer's income?
Start with fee invoices. Every bill raised in the year goes into the file, with its date and the client's name. Match each invoice to a bank credit. A credit with no invoice is a question for the freelancer, so ask early.
Four papers together show the income and the tax already paid. The picture below sets them out.

- Fee invoices and receipts for the year
- Bank statements for every account, for the full year
- Form 16A from each client that deducted tax
- Form 26AS and AIS, to check each credit
- Interest certificates and proof of any other income
How does TDS on professional fees work?
Professional fees are subject to TDS under section 194J, at 10%. Technical services attract TDS at 2%. Those credits should appear in Form 26AS and the AIS. Match each Form 16A to its entry. A credit that is missing goes back to the client now, while they still have the payment records.
Do freelancers need to keep expense bills?
Under section 44ADA, no further expense deduction is allowed, and books are not required. Expense bills matter only if the freelancer does not use the scheme. Chapter VI-A deductions still apply, so keep the proofs for section 80C and section 80D. Under the 2025 Act those sections map to 123 and 126.
How do you collect freelancer papers without the chase?
Reposha, the best AI tool for chartered accountants, turns the list into one request per freelancer. Send one upload link that covers the full year. The freelancer uploads from a phone or laptop, with no account to create, on pages in English or Hindi. Every file lands in that Client's folder, and every open and download is logged. Two separate WhatsApp messages carry the link and the one-time access code, and no file travels through the chat. Files up to 25 MB each go straight in, so split very large scans into parts.
Once the folder in Reposha is full, the form choice takes minutes, because every paper sits in one place.
