44ADA ITR Documents: The Checklist for Doctors and Professionals

44ADA documents: gross receipts register, TDS certificates, bank statements, deduction proofs, ITR-4

A doctor sends a folder in March. Some papers sit in a clinic's WhatsApp group. Some are in a personal email. One bank statement covers the wrong month. The doctor says the return must be simple, because there are no books. That part is true. The proof still matters.

What documents does a 44ADA return need?

A 44ADA return needs the gross receipts for the year, the TDS certificates from payers, the bank statements for every account, and proof of any Chapter VI-A deductions. Section 44ADA covers specified professions under section 44AA(1). These include legal, medical, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration and film artists. The usual return is ITR-4 (Sugam). Our ITR-4 presumptive taxation checklist covers that form in full.

The 44ADA checklist

Start from the complete ITR filing checklist, then add the papers below for a professional under 44ADA. Each line names what the paper proves and who usually holds it.

For non-audit returns the usual due date is 31 July, or the later date notified for ITR-4. Dates can be extended, so check the latest notifications or the portal. If the client also bills as a freelancer, the freelancer document guide covers the extra papers.

How is the profit worked out under 44ADA?

Under 44ADA, the deemed profit is 50% of gross receipts. No further expense deduction is allowed. The doctor does not list clinic rent or staff pay one by one. Chapter VI-A deductions still apply, such as section 80C and section 80D. Books are not required. The scheme also has a limit: gross receipts up to ₹50 lakh, or ₹75 lakh if cash receipts are no more than 5%.

How 44ADA works out the profit: add gross receipts, take 50 percent, skip expense claims, add Chapter VI-A, file ITR-4

What trips up 44ADA files?

Receipts that do not match Form 26AS. Payers can deduct TDS at a different rate, or quote the wrong PAN. Compare the receipts with Form 26AS before the return is filed.

Clinic and personal money in one account. Mixed accounts make receipts hard to prove. Ask for a statement for each account, and mark the one that holds the professional receipts.

Opting out of 44ADA. If the professional opts out and declares a lower profit, books and a tax audit under section 44AB(d) can apply, when total income is above the basic exemption limit.

Old section numbers. From tax year 2026-27, presumptive taxation sits under section 58 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. Returns for FY 2025-26 still follow the Income-tax Act, 1961.
