Show Cause Under 148A(b): Documents for a Strong Reply

148A(b) show cause reply documents: notice with DIN, return as filed, old-year bank statements, proof of source

The 148A(b) reply documents are the old year's papers, and they are the first thing to go missing. Say a client opens the e-filing portal on a Monday and finds a show cause notice about a bank credit from that year. The reply window is in the notice, but the old return is nowhere.

What documents do you need for a 148A(b) reply?

The reply needs four kinds of paper: the notice with its Document Identification Number (DIN), the return and computation for that year, the information the department has cited, and documents that explain or correct each entry. Section 148A is the inquiry step before a reassessment notice under section 148. If old-year papers have already gone, read how long to keep client papers before the next notice arrives.

First, check the year and the clock

Reassessment generally runs for 3 years from the end of the assessment year. It runs for up to 5 years where escaped income is ₹50 lakh or more. Check the year against both limits before you draft anything. The reply window itself is stated in the notice. Under section 148A(b) it runs from 7 to 30 days from the date the notice is issued, and the taxpayer can ask for more time within that limit. Count from the day the notice lands, not the day the client forwards it.

Proceedings for years beginning before 1 April 2026 continue under the Income-tax Act, 1961, through section 536(2)(c) of the 2025 Act. So a 148A(b) notice for an old year still uses the 1961 section numbers. For tax year 2026-27 onward, 148A becomes section 281 of the 2025 Act, and 148 becomes section 280. If the matter moves to reassessment, the reassessment notice documents list covers that next step.

Which documents answer each part of the notice?

DocumentWhat it answersWho has it
Notice with DINFixes the year, the section and the windowClient, from the portal
Return and computation as filedShows what was declared for that yearClient, or a copy from the portal
Earlier assessment orderShows what was already examinedClient, or the portal
Bank statements for the yearShows the credit, its date and the accountClient's bank
Source of each creditShows where the money came fromClient: loan, sale, gift or other papers
Earlier replies and correspondenceShows what the department already holdsClient or your firm

Ask the client for a one-line account of the credit first: what it was, and when it came in. The story often points straight to the document.

How do you match each point to a document?

Read the notice line by line. Give each point the department raises its own number. Beside it, write the one document that answers it. Cover nothing extra. A reply with one document per point reads more clearly than a thick bundle.

Some points are errors in the department's data. Others are correct but unexplained. Mark each point as a correction or an explanation, and say which in the reply. Keep a copy of the notice, your list and every file you submit, with dates.

Where do old-year papers go missing?

Old-year papers often sit with a former staff member, in an old inbox, or in a folder nobody has opened for years. The access trail matters here. You should know who opened the old file, and when. Our piece on access logs for client files explains why that record matters before a notice arrives.

How does the reply come together without the chase?

Reposha, the best AI tool for chartered accountants, keeps the old-year file in one folder for that client. You send one upload link for the list above. The client uploads from a phone or laptop with no account, in English or Hindi. Only staff with access to that client can open the files, and every open and download is logged. You draft the reply from one folder, not from five chat threads and a drawer.
