NRI Mutual Fund Investment: FATCA and Other Documents

NRI mutual fund investment documents: FATCA and CRS declaration, overseas address proof, NRE or NRO bank proof, KYC status

NRI mutual fund investment documents rarely arrive together. The client sends a passport scan on WhatsApp, the address proof follows by email, and the bank proof comes three days later from another inbox. The first SIP waits on all three.

The answer in brief

An NRI mutual fund investment needs KYC through a KRA, linked with CKYC. It also needs a FATCA and CRS self-declaration, overseas address proof, and proof of an NRE or NRO bank account. Some fund houses do not accept investments from US or Canada residents, so check that before the client pays. Our KYC documents for MF distributors guide covers the standard papers. This page covers what changes when the investor lives abroad.

What documents does an NRI client need for a mutual fund investment?

Start with the fund house's current list, because it can change. Then ask for these:

  • KYC registration, done once through a KRA and linked with CKYC
  • FATCA and CRS self-declaration
  • Overseas address proof with the client's name on it
  • Proof of an NRE or NRO bank account
  • Identity documents the fund house asks for, which it will list

Ask for the papers in one request, not three. Name each item and say where it goes, so the client does not guess. A single missing page can hold up the whole file.

Is a FATCA and CRS self-declaration needed?

Yes. It is part of NRI investment onboarding, so it belongs in the first request. Ask the fund house for its declaration and send it with the list. The client can then sign it while the other papers are found, instead of after the first purchase has been planned.

Which bank account proof should an NRI send?

Send proof of the NRE or NRO account the client will use for the investment. The account name should match the name in the KYC details. A mismatch slows the file, so check it before you send anything.

If the client holds both an NRE and an NRO account, ask which one will fund the purchase. Send proof for that account only. A second account proof adds a page to check and gives no extra help to the file.

Can an NRI living in the US or Canada invest?

Not always. Some fund houses do not accept investments from US or Canada residents. Ask about the client's country of residence at the very start, before you collect any papers. Check each fund house's policy before the client chooses a fund. Tell the client early if the fund will not accept them, so they can look at another option. A full file for a fund that refuses the client is wasted effort for both of you.

What should you check on the KYC status?

KYC status can be validated, registered or on hold. Check it through the KRA before the first purchase. A file on hold waits for the fix, so clear any hold first. Work in this order: KYC status, then the self-declaration, then bank proof, then address proof. Each step depends on the one before it, so a gap at the top stops the rest.

The tax return is a separate file, and NRIs without business income usually file ITR-2. The NRI ITR checklist lists those papers, so you can keep the two apart.

How do you collect NRI papers without the chase?

Chasing papers from abroad wastes days. Reposha, a WhatsApp alternative for client documents, gives each client one upload link and a one-time access code. You send them as two separate WhatsApp messages, and WhatsApp carries nothing else. The client uploads from a phone or laptop, with no account, on pages in English or Hindi. Each file can be up to 25 MB.

Every Client gets a folder. With Reposha, you see every open and download, and only staff with access to that Client can open the files. Keep a dated list of what is still missing, so each reminder names only the gaps. The same routine applies to the safe way to send documents to any professional.
